Because of his struggle with the news of his father, Jack then joins in, in taunting George by calling him a faggot as well. Another factor would be when Jack starts dating Ann, the only he is dating her is his feeling that he has to prove that he isn't like his father. I think that Jack is reacting so intensely because he is confused about the situation, when he thought of his life one way and in one day he feels it has turned upside down.
When Jack's dad confessed that he was gay he was shocked. Jack was mad and kind of disgusted because his father was gay. He is mad that many grown ups knew but never told him. Also at his school the kids make fun on gay people,his best friend Max, is one of those people; so he doesnt tell him that his father is gay. Jack trys to protect himself from looking gay by "dating" a girl that he didn't like. Now Jack is starting struggling to adapt to this news and seeing his father as the same person.
The first thing Jack did when he was off the boat was run. He ran to try and escape from the news he had just heard, and he ran away to escape from his father. Even though there was no way Jack could really run away from either, he chose to run in order feel like he had control over situation and he could just leave it all in the dust. In this way, Jack's running is very similar to the running we saw in Color of Water, as it provides more of a psychological escape, rather than a physical one. Before Jack's father told him he was gay, Jack had been considerable close to him, and often wished he were still living in the same house. After Jack learned that his father was gay he rarely spoke to his father and even expressed hatred towards him. During this time he begins to rely on his mother more than before, and also starts to isolate himself from his father.
Jack felt hurt that his parents had never told him what was going on, they were trying to "protect him". Jack did not feel like he was being protected, he felt as though he was being lied too. It was hard for him to think about all that was going on without him knowing. He was shocked when his father told him that he was gay. He had known his father all his life, and he did not understand how there could be something so big that he never knew about his father.
Suddenly everything connected. He thought about things in the past and started to question everything.
He also reacted so strongly because he did not know how his friends and classmates would react.
He knew what jeers her would face if his peers hound out.
He did not know how his friends, including his best friend Max would respond.
Jack reacts in such a shocked way that he runs away. He tries to run like his father had been for the past years. Then Jack was very angry and began to take his anger out on one kid. He got a girlfriend he didn't like and then started holding her hand so people didn't think he was gay. Jack finally closed his father out and refused to see him.
Jack finds out his dad was gay and had feelings of anger and saddness, he feels confused and does not know what to do. he thinks differently of his father, he feels that his dad has changed even though all that changed was that he learned his dad was different, this was a confusing moment his dad thought he was ready to bear. although this gives him harder to deal with emotions.

At the beginning of the book Jack reacts very harshly to his dad's revelation of his sexuality. He becomes angry and is very confused about what to feel. Along with his parents being separated, his mom isn't very stable. He begins to fear homosexuals and does many things to make himself believe he isn't homosexual. Ii think the reason he reacts so harshly is because of his mother, situation at home and his lack of knowledge to homosexuals.
Jack is totally shocked and VERY mad that his father is a "homo." He is very confused by the fact that he is a father and is still gay, he can't understand how his father just figured out that he was gay. He hates is father for being gay. Probably he hates his father because he does not understand what it means to be gay or an LGBT person. Jack is also very mad because he felt like the whole world knew his father was gay before he did. His parents said that they did not tell him because they did not think he was mature enough to know yet. But by the way Jack acted around his father one would think, "will he ever be ready to know and discuss his fathers sexuality?"
Jack's reaction to finding out that his father was gay really showed the harsh realities for gays, bisexuals, transgenders, et cetera in this time period. He walked all the way home, rather than riding in his gay father's car. This showed how much he wanted to distance himself from people like him. Mostly he is pressured by kids in his school to disassociate himself from what they commonly call "faggots." They beat up anyone who even showed the smallest sign of being gay such as the kid who tried to change in the stall. Also his mother served as an influence because of her hatred of her former husband, which was easily channeled into Jack.
Being a gay, Jack's father was quite ashamed to reveal his sexual orientation to his son.
Jack was extremely embarrassed, shocked, angry, a mixture of negative feelings for his father. Jack now understood why Paul divorced, could not get along with society, and other major factors that affects his dignity.
Jack is very surprised to find that his dad was gay. His dad did not seem to him the superman that he was described as in the first few pages. He seemed to be a very different man. That may have increased the intensity of his pain. Before his dad seemed liked the pefect dad: Always takes him to the movies on Saturdays, Calls him 24/7, loves to be with him. He is the same person, but Jack sees him differently. Also, the pain can also be a result of that being the reason for his parents' divorce. Jack's friend Max thinks that gay peopole are different and makes Jack's life much harder.
when jack was told by his father that he was gay, his world fell apart. His father was like his superhero. But when he realized that his dad was not "normal" to him, he felt like his life as a normal kid was over. It especially hit him when that kid was in the bathroom changing and other boys called him a faggot and a queer.
Since Jack never knew why his parents got divorced, it put a lot of stress on him. He would always try to figure out why, but never got it. When he finds out that his father is gay it turned is life around completely. It made him look at his father as if he were a stranger. He treated his father with know respect, and stopped trusting him. Their relationship began to fall apart. The way Jack took the news made him question himself, that if someone who is gay should be accepted or not. He took his anger out by beating up a kid in his class, who everyone called a "queer". He started accepting the gay community a little later in the book, when he found out one of the "cool" girls in his class, father is gay. This effected him a whole lot, but he is stuck between accepting them or not. Because his best friend is convincing him that it being gay isn't right. So he is still deciding at this point.
As soon as Jack found out his father was gay, he flipped. Jack was so shocked to hear this from his dad. It was not easy for his father as well. Because of the community Jacklived in he looked down apon gays, difference, his father Paul, and himself for having a homosexual dad. Jack now had no one to look up to.
Jack is in a very confused, sad and angry state. He is filled with hatred toward his father. To jack, he no longer feels like his father anymore because of his homosexuality. This completley changes jacks view of his father and now realizes the reason of his parents divorce. He is very shocked about this whole situation and is upset with the way he will be viewed. This change makes him abnormal to the people around him and even his best friend Max starts to make fun of the situation.
Jack was upset and hated his father when he found out that his father was gay. When he first found out that his father was gay, he ran away from him and got a girl to act like she is his girlfriend so that people in his school knew that he was not gay. This just shows that he is also embarassed. He is trying hard to cope with this. He despises gays now probably because he is going to be teased.
