"Jack" Post #1

In the opening of the book, we see Jack's very strong reaction to his father's revelation about his sexuality. How does he react? What factors make his reaction so intense?

Jack had never known why his parents got divorced, and he was shocked to find out that the reason was because his dad was gay. He had never thought about this, and at first it changed the way that he saw his dad. He believed that his dad was different after he found out that he was gay, even though he was still the same person. Jack struggles with the thought of his father being gay, especially because his best friend Max finds this very odd and almost makes fun of the situation. Jack is also struggling with trying to figure out how this all effects him, if it does.

Jack's reaction is one of anger, confusion and hatred for his father. the factors that make his reaction has harsh as it is are that around him, being gay is considered a curse. having a gay father earnes him taunts at school. it can also be traced back to the original problem in the book. his father left because he was gay and no longer happy in a strait relationship. there isn't much support for experiances like this. he feals alone in the world and without a father to help him through. his father is considered a new person. someone jack has never met before.

When Jack first finds out that his dad is gay in a sense he wonders why. Through his anger and sadness he asks why. He does not see it as a normal thing especially because of the people around him that influence him. These people are his mom and even his best friend Max. It makes Jack think in many different ways. It especially makes him think about who his father is. Jack does not see the same person there even though it still is the same person. The reason Jack thinks these things is because of his surroundings.

Jack was beyond confused. he was confused because he knew the reason for his parents divorce, and his misery. when his parents were divorced his life became miserable because they would just fight and fight. now that he knows i think he is feeling a little angry, sad, and now he understands. he understand that their divorce was because his dad realized something life changing. if i were jack i would be feeling a lot right now. i would be thinking about what my dad is going through, what my mom is going through, and what i think about it. jack is going to have some serious problems dealing with this.

When Jack hears that his father is homosexual, he feels very ill, and refuses to be on the boat with Paul any longer. Jack claims that he hates his father and swears that he always will hate him, and that he would definitely kill himself if he himself became homosexual. Jack changes drastically over the next few pages, especially during the situation involving George in the locker room during gym class. Jack feels scared that he would become homosexual simply because his father is. This makes Jack crave a girlfriend who he does not care about, just to prove that he is not gay.

When Jack first finds out about his dad's homosexuality, he has a very strong reaction. He feels angry, sick, and confused. He feels these very strong emotions mainly because it is a shock to him. It is such a shock for two reasons, one because he realizes this is why his parents got divorced and two, because being gay in Jack's "world" is an extremely bad thing.

jack is confused and angry because he saw his dad as a cool guy or role model but all of the sudden he finds out that his dad is gay and it changes his whole perspective on him. he felt like his dad let him down because he wasn't someone to look up to but more like a stranger. he is confused because although he found out why his parents divorced he needs to figure out how having a gay father effects him.

Jack was very upset and angry when his father told him that he was gay.In the beginning of the book you could sense something was going to happen. Jack ended up getting made fun of because of his father being gay. It was as if his life was "crashing" down on him. When Jack's parents first got divorced he tried to pretend as if every thing was the same. He knew his life would never be the same again. He didn't know how to react to the situation that is why he was confused. Everything was okay even with the divorce, but at that moment it wasn't. This situation affected Jack very much.

jack is very upset about his father's sexuality. In jack's mind this is a very bad thing. This is when he first finds out why his parents divorced. THis then cased him to see his father in a different perceptive. Jack is not sure how to act or respond to (in his mind) the problem.

When Jacks father tells him that he is gay, Jack is both surprised and angry. Jacks reaction to his fathers revelation was very strong. He did not want to have any connection to his father for a long time. I think that the reason that his reaction was so intense was because Jacks fathers partner was someone who Jack knew and who was his fathers roommate. Jack said that the news was like "an explosion like a firecracker" Jack could never see his father the same way he did when he was younger. It is also sad that his friend Max does not help Jack confront this situation but instead makes fun of it.

When Jack finds out that his father is gay, he immediately thinks of at least half a dozen stereotypical things that he knows about gay people. He wonders if his dad is into decorating and who he sleeps with. I think the concept that somebody could actually be gay was very hard for Jack to wrap his head around. In his community, being different was not considered a good thing. It was not something that was easily embraced and therefore, anything new was extremely foreign. Scary, even. Jack forgot about all the things that made his dad special and he chose to ignore the other things about his dad and focused in on his sexual preference. If Jack had grown up in an environment where people easily accepted different lifestyles, then what Jack's dad told him would have been much easier to understand. However, this was not the case, especially at Jack's school, where in order to fit in you had to be a "normal" kid. Another thing that could have sparked such a strong reaction in Jack could have been that his parents divorced. Now that Jack knew the reason behind the split, it was even harder for him to understand. Especially since the divorce was so difficult for his whole family.

For any child or young adult to experience such a shock of their parents being divorced, then to find out that the reason was because one of the parents was gay is definitely difficult to handle. The relationship of jack and his father would be even more shaken because of this. Jacks prospective of his father would also change because this secret was kept from him.

Also it is sad to see the respect jack has of his father wither so fast because of this revelation.

When jack's father takes him out on the middle of the lake and tells jack about his confession, jack flips out. He cant deal with his father being "queer." When he goes bowling with Maggie and Max, Max finds out about Jack's father. He tells someone at school and soon everyone knows the truth. Jack cant deal with people calling him a "fag baby," spray painting his locker, growing up, and understanding life all at once. Jack thinks about many reasons why his father left, and what he left behind. He feels torn in half, because he hates his father for leaving him and his mother, but also loves him because he is his father. Jack sees that he is growing up and truing 16, he's getting driver ed lessons, new thoughts, and different emotions, but the old him is still there. Jack thinks that his dad is to blame from all the trouble he is getting from the other kids at school is his fathers fault. Growing up in this environment kids use words like "fag," or "queer" lightly not knowing what it really means. It tortures Jack inside to know that his father is gay and he does not understand why he left him and his mother, or why he has to deal with all these things when he is just a human being.

i agree with austen when he says that it was a sad reality when Jack's respect for his father withered when he found out his father was gay. But in a way, Jack had no other idea how to react. he knew what his friends thought of gay people, and he also knew the insulting terms they used towards each other, like "fag" or "faggot". Jack had fear of the unknown. He knew what the reaction of his peers would be, but he did not know what the outcome of his feelings were going to be after his peers found out his father was gay. Jack felt lost because he could not, and did not, want to talk to any one about his dad's homosexuality.
Jack feels this anger, and illness bcause it is his first encounter with the truth that lied behind his parents' divorce. And all of the sudden new realities and alternate insights come to be. but ultimately, Jack believes that he hates gay people because it was one of the core reasons for his parents divorce, and to him, being gay just did not seem normal.
All Jack really cares about is being normal. He has these perfect fantasies about about what a family should be like. In many ways, jack feels like an outsider. Not only are his parents divorced, but he also is not very popular at school. And then he find s out his father is gay and this upsets Jack even more because he believes his life is a never ending string of tragidies and unfortunate events. But whilst Jack spends so much time comparing his family to others he does not appreciate the fact that his parents only kept this a secret from him to protect him, and make sure that for as long as possible, he could have a semi-normal life.

Jack feels completely conflicted within himself about his father's sexuality. Especially with the influences against it such as his mother and Max. This gives him the idea that being gay is associated with something negative. Jack feels angry that his father was a big part of the family's separation. Along with fearing that he will turn into a homosexual himself. Jack refuses to let his father have anything to do with him, which leaves no one for Jack to confide in. W

Jack reacts with anger and rage.
when he first find out in the boat asoon as he gets back on shore he refuses to get into his dad's car and in some way he denies that his father is his dad. THen he tries to shut off all the conections he has toward him just like his mother did before. He also begins to express his hate toward other homo-sexuals. He probalbly parcialy acts this way becuase his friends and aquatances from school also show their hate for them in obsene manner. Though many of of the adults in the book like Max's dad and Micheal seem to understand and "protect" homo-sexuals. After going to the movies with his dad he's more axepting of his dad but not nessesairly to homo-sexuals.

When Jack's father reveals that he is gay, Jack reacts very strongly and, in my opinion, blindly. He tells Paul that he is sick and runs away, refusing to talk to him. At school, Jack reacts very defensively to any comments made about homosexuality. He joins in on the groups of students who name others as gay, or other aggressive uses of the word. Other than his peers, Jack seemed to have no other knowledge about homosexuality. I wonder why, even without influence from adults, Jack felt that when his dad, Paul, revealed his homosexuality that it negated his role as a father. What created this seemingly deep and unwavering sense of homophobia in Jack?

Jacks reaction to his father's confession is far from positive. He hates the idea of not being "normal." I think that being normal and defining normalwas a big theme in the begining of the book.

Another way that Jack reacts, is just deciding to hates all homosexuals and anything that has to do with homosexuality. He even begins to hate his own father.

After his father came out to him, Jack started seeing everything in a new way. When he saw his father again, he looked for changes in him that showed off his "gayness." Also, Jack started to become more self-concious and thought that since his dad was gay, people would begin to think that he was gay. To show that he wasn't, he used an innocent girl to flirt with and pretend to like to show that he was interested in girls and not guys.

After finding out that his father was gay, Jack's reactions were confusion, anger and hatred. This news also lead Jack into memories of his parents' divorce that made more sense with this shock. There were a number of factors that made Jack's reaction so intense. Such as Jack calling his own father a faggot acting as if his father was a completely different person, even though before his father told him he was gay, Jack saw his father as his hero. Another factor would be when Jack was in gym class, other boys were picking on George Simpson because he rather change in bathroom stall than in front of the other boys. Because of his struggle with the news of his father, Jack then joins in, in taunting George by calling him a faggot as well. Another factor would be when Jack starts dating Ann, the only he is dating her is his feeling that he has to prove that he isn't like his father. I think that Jack is reacting so intensely because he is confused about the situation, when he thought of his life one way and in one day he feels it has turned upside down.

When Jack's dad confessed that he was gay he was shocked. Jack was mad and kind of disgusted because his father was gay. He is mad that many grown ups knew but never told him. Also at his school the kids make fun on gay people, his best friend Max, is one of those people; so he doesnt tell him that his father is gay. Jack trys to protect himself from looking gay by "dating" a girl that he didn't like. Now Jack is starting struggling to adapt to this news and seeing his father as the same person.

The first thing Jack did when he was off the boat was run. He ran to try and escape from the news he had just heard, and he ran away to escape from his father. Even though there was no way Jack could really run away from either, he chose to run in order feel like he had control over situation and he could just leave it all in the dust. In this way, Jack's running is very similar to the running we saw in Color of Water, as it provides more of a psychological escape, rather than a physical one. Before Jack's father told him he was gay, Jack had been considerable close to him, and often wished he were still living in the same house. After Jack learned that his father was gay he rarely spoke to his father and even expressed hatred towards him. During this time he begins to rely on his mother more than before, and also starts to isolate himself from his father.

Jack felt hurt that his parents had never told him what was going on, they were trying to "protect him". Jack did not feel like he was being protected, he felt as though he was being lied too. It was hard for him to think about all that was going on without him knowing. He was shocked when his father told him that he was gay. He had known his father all his life, and he did not understand how there could be something so big that he never knew about his father.
Suddenly everything connected. He thought about things in the past and started to question everything.
He also reacted so strongly because he did not know how his friends and classmates would react.
He knew what jeers her would face if his peers hound out.
He did not know how his friends, including his best friend Max would respond.

Jack reacts in such a shocked way that he runs away. He tries to run like his father had been for the past years. Then Jack was very angry and began to take his anger out on one kid. He got a girlfriend he didn't like and then started holding her hand so people didn't think he was gay. Jack finally closed his father out and refused to see him.

Jack finds out his dad was gay and had feelings of anger and saddness, he feels confused and does not know what to do. he thinks differently of his father, he feels that his dad has changed even though all that changed was that he learned his dad was different, this was a confusing moment his dad thought he was ready to bear. although this gives him harder to deal with emotions.

At the beginning of the book Jack reacts very harshly to his dad's revelation of his sexuality. He becomes angry and is very confused about what to feel. Along with his parents being separated, his mom isn't very stable. He begins to fear homosexuals and does many things to make himself believe he isn't homosexual. Ii think the reason he reacts so harshly is because of his mother, situation at home and his lack of knowledge to homosexuals.

Jack is totally shocked and VERY mad that his father is a "homo." He is very confused by the fact that he is a father and is still gay, he can't understand how his father just figured out that he was gay. He hates is father for being gay. Probably he hates his father because he does not understand what it means to be gay or an LGBT person. Jack is also very mad because he felt like the whole world knew his father was gay before he did. His parents said that they did not tell him because they did not think he was mature enough to know yet. But by the way Jack acted around his father one would think, "will he ever be ready to know and discuss his fathers sexuality?"

Jack's reaction to finding out that his father was gay really showed the harsh realities for gays, bisexuals, transgenders, et cetera in this time period. He walked all the way home, rather than riding in his gay father's car. This showed how much he wanted to distance himself from people like him. Mostly he is pressured by kids in his school to disassociate himself from what they commonly call "faggots." They beat up anyone who even showed the smallest sign of being gay such as the kid who tried to change in the stall. Also his mother served as an influence because of her hatred of her former husband, which was easily channeled into Jack.

Being a gay, Jack's father was quite ashamed to reveal his sexual orientation to his son.
Jack was extremely embarrassed, shocked, angry, a mixture of negative feelings for his father. Jack now understood why Paul divorced, could not get along with society, and other major factors that affects his dignity.

Jack is very surprised to find that his dad was gay. His dad did not seem to him the superman that he was described as in the first few pages. He seemed to be a very different man. That may have increased the intensity of his pain. Before his dad seemed liked the pefect dad: Always takes him to the movies on Saturdays, Calls him 24/7, loves to be with him. He is the same person, but Jack sees him differently. Also, the pain can also be a result of that being the reason for his parents' divorce. Jack's friend Max thinks that gay peopole are different and makes Jack's life much harder.

when jack was told by his father that he was gay, his world fell apart. His father was like his superhero. But when he realized that his dad was not "normal" to him, he felt like his life as a normal kid was over. It especially hit him when that kid was in the bathroom changing and other boys called him a faggot and a queer.

Since Jack never knew why his parents got divorced, it put a lot of stress on him. He would always try to figure out why, but never got it. When he finds out that his father is gay it turned is life around completely. It made him look at his father as if he were a stranger. He treated his father with know respect, and stopped trusting him. Their relationship began to fall apart. The way Jack took the news made him question himself, that if someone who is gay should be accepted or not. He took his anger out by beating up a kid in his class, who everyone called a "queer". He started accepting the gay community a little later in the book, when he found out one of the "cool" girls in his class, father is gay. This effected him a whole lot, but he is stuck between accepting them or not. Because his best friend is convincing him that it being gay isn't right. So he is still deciding at this point.

As soon as Jack found out his father was gay, he flipped. Jack was so shocked to hear this from his dad. It was not easy for his father as well. Because of the community Jacklived in he looked down apon gays, difference, his father Paul, and himself for having a homosexual dad. Jack now had no one to look up to.

Jack is in a very confused, sad and angry state. He is filled with hatred toward his father. To jack, he no longer feels like his father anymore because of his homosexuality. This completley changes jacks view of his father and now realizes the reason of his parents divorce. He is very shocked about this whole situation and is upset with the way he will be viewed. This change makes him abnormal to the people around him and even his best friend Max starts to make fun of the situation.

Jack was upset and hated his father when he found out that his father was gay. When he first found out that his father was gay, he ran away from him and got a girl to act like she is his girlfriend so that people in his school knew that he was not gay. This just shows that he is also embarassed. He is trying hard to cope with this. He despises gays now probably because he is going to be teased.
