The relationship between his father and Oscar is remarkably strong, however it
borders on the darker emotions. It is Oscars’s father who is mostly affected. He is not a bad
father, however, he is very passionate about his son’s well- being. Oscar’s current state of heath combined with other daily tensions was to much for him, that is why he brought home so much
food, not only for his family’s well- being but to “drown his problems”. Oscar on the other hand
seems to like his father, however, he is troubled by the fact that he is one of the causes that so ails
his father. It is their caring for each other which is leading to their pains. This is not to say they should be indifferent to one another, rather they should stop plaguing themselves with concern.

Food seems to represent the family’s way of coping with life. Without their food, Oscar’s family would not be rich in the sense of owning a luxury. It is the only thing they
could boast about if they saw the need to. Oscar’s family is really seeking a window of freedom
from their troubles.

Quote: “ My father asked me “now what would you like to eat?” I didn’t knowwhat to say- didn’t even know the last time I had been asked that question.” That quote stood out
to me because it was really the turning point of the story and a happy ending. But It had a
dangerous side to it, for if his kidneys could not remove those toxins [form the hamburger] he
could be internally damaged.
